課程概述

Course Description

This course deals with two related descriptions of contemporary culture: the posthuman and the global. A few questions to be asked are: Can we think of the global in terms of a new kind of collectivity defined by "posthuman" relations? What kind of cultural practice is possible in an age of globalized "industrialization" of memory? In what sense can we say that such destruction of individuation is accompanied by a corresponding disabling of collective (transindividual) agency, perhaps in the same way as the human and the posthuman can be said to be locked in mutuality? By attempting to answer such questions, we aim to propose a concept of the global, including but not limited to what is usually called "globalization," as distributed repetition of the local.

課程目標
Course Objectives

Students will be introduced to major topics and positions in the discourse of the posthuman. In addition to introductory readings, we will also engage in the "forming" or "informing" of an alternative conception of global culture, based on the posthuman principle of distributed cognition. Such a conception is useful in pointing to possible ways of dealing with situations where local investment in agency is necessarily imbricated with the opening up of a seemingly impoverished space of technical mediation. This should help in explaining why concerns with the global tend to circle back to the local, or why imaginaries of disembodiment is typically refigured/repeated in the embodied affectivity of self-reflexive media.
